Radon Huntsville › Services › Radon Mitigation
Radon Huntsville is where Huntsville homeowners turn for radon mitigation, with every system installed by a nationally certified radon mitigation contractor. If your test came back at or above 4 pCi/L, or between 2 and 4 and you want it lower, a mitigation system is the proven fix.
Most systems use active soil depressurization: a fan creates gentle suction under the foundation so radon is drawn out through a sealed pipe before it can enter your living space. The approach depends on whether your home sits on a slab, a basement, a crawl space or a mix of these.
What happens during a mitigation install
- Inspection: the contractor looks at your foundation, crawl space or basement, and finds the best place to draw suction and route the pipe.
- Suction point: a small hole is cored through the slab, or a sealed membrane is laid over the crawl space soil, and a pipe is connected.
- Fan: an inline radon fan goes in the attic, garage or outside wall, never in the living space.
- Vent: the pipe exits above the roof line so radon disperses outdoors.
- Sealing: major cracks and openings are sealed to make the system more effective.
- Gauge and label: a manometer (U-tube gauge) shows the system is drawing suction, and the system is labeled.
After the install
The EPA recommends testing again after the system has been running, ideally within 30 days of installation, and then every two years or after major renovations. Check the manometer now and then. If the liquid levels in the U-tube even out, the fan may have stopped. See radon fan replacement.
Picking the right contractor
Alabama doesn't license radon contractors itself, so ask for NRPP or NRSB certification, proof of insurance, and a written quote that shows the fan model, pipe route, where it exits, and what follow-up testing is included. Ask what happens if the post-mitigation test isn't below the target.
Frequently asked questions
How much will mitigation lower my radon?
Well-installed systems commonly bring radon well below 4 pCi/L. The result depends on your soil, foundation and how well it's sealed, so ask your contractor what result they commit to in writing.
Does a radon system use much electricity?
Radon fans run continuously but are small. Ask your contractor for the fan's wattage so you can estimate the cost.
Can I sell my house with a radon system?
Yes. A working, labeled system with a recent passing test is a selling point. See radon testing for home sales.
