Radon Huntsville helps people building new homes around Huntsville, Madison and Athens get a certified radon professional to design or install radon-resistant features during construction. North Alabama's growth means a lot of new homes are going up in counties ADPH lists as high radon potential.

Radon-resistant new construction (RRNC) uses a few simple steps during the build. Later, if testing shows a need, the passive system can be turned into an active one by adding a fan.

The basic RRNC steps

  • A layer of clean gravel under the slab so soil gas can move freely.
  • Plastic sheeting over the gravel as a soil gas retarder.
  • Sealing and caulking openings, cracks and joints in the foundation.
  • A vent pipe from the gravel layer up through the house and out the roof.
  • An electrical outlet in the attic near the pipe, so a fan can be added later.

Test after you move in

RRNC lowers radon in many homes, but it can't promise a low level. Test your new home after you move in. If radon is 4 pCi/L or higher, a fan can be added to the existing pipe to make it an active system. See radon fan service.

Talk to your builder early

Bring it up before the foundation is formed. Some builders include passive radon pipes already. Ask what's included, where the pipe runs, and whether the attic has power for a future fan.
